Evan Marshall, Bio
Classical music, bluegrass and pop are fused throughout the
mandolin magic of Mr. Evan Marshall. Inspired equally by the late
classical violinist Jascha Heifitz and the dean of country guitar
Chet Atkins, Marshall has crafted a highly virtuosic approach to the
mandolin that blends bass lines, chordal accompaniment, lightning
fast passages, and tremolo melodies to create an exciting solo mandolin
style unsurpassed by his peers. Although he studied classical violin
as a youngster, Marshall found his natural musical voice after switching
to the mandolin at the age of 14. Marshall's 1990 album, Mandolin
Magic, was produced by David Grisman. Marshall continued to showcase
his interpretive skills on his popular 1995 album, Evan Marshall
Is the Lone Arranger.
Evan Marshall possesses an uncanny technique on mandolin, which the
Raleigh-Durham Independent called "superhuman",
the Los Angeles Times called "remarkable", the
Washington Post labeled "truly dazzling", and the
Fresno Bee called "mind-boggling". Besides his
"obvious virtuosity" (Pasadenda Star News}, he
also has, "in color and texture...a stunning mastery of interpretation"
(Saint Paul Pioneer Press). Evan's accomplishments are legendary
among other artists of the plucked string; the late Chet Atkins called
him "one of the few great musicians of our time"; David
Grisman put it simply: "the world's fastest mandolinsist."
Evan has toured extensively in the United States and Great Britain,
perfoming at venues ranging from symphony concerts to nationally broadcast
radio shows, including "A Prairie Home Campanion with Garrison
Keller". He has appeared with a wide variety of other artists,
from the Los Angeles Philharmonic to Phil Everly. In 2001 Evan was
a Featured Guest Artist with a number of distinguished orchestras,
including the Houston Symphony, Tulsa Philharmonic, Long Beach Symphony,
Grand Rapids Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony, and San Antonio Symphony
with return bookings in Fort Worth and Grand Rapids in 2002. Rounder
Records released his third solo recording in 1995, Evan Marshall
is the Lone Arranger which follows his 1990 Rounder album, Mandolin
Magic. Evan was born and raised in Southern California where he
currently resides with his family. He attended Occidental College,
graduating Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and with Honors in Music.
